Waveforms

The work looks into the creation of sound through a form of graphic notation, an unstandardised practice where sound or music is interpreted visually.

Waveforms seeks to draw attention to the unseen and overlooked. The point of departure in this sound and visual installation was a sequence of paint splatters which could be found deposited on the floors of The Mill. These remnants, seemingly deriving from primary colours, are evident of The Mill’s use as an artist’s studio and Gabriel Caruana’s creative endeavours. A mapping process was used, guided by self-imposed algorithmic rules which directed the selection of splatters based on colour, length and size. This exercise formulated a series of waveforms which were translated to sound waves generating various tones. It subsequently evoked the creation and interpretation of random compositions connecting these seemingly dispersed splatters.
